Professional History
Maria Meadows, M.S.Ed, LPCC is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the State of Ohio who counsels clients at PsyCare’s Austintown and Liberty Clinics.

Maria started her mental health career with a unique experience: She worked at a residential treatment facility called Hopewell, where she helped clients with severe and persistent mental health issues work on a farm in a community-like setting. Following this experience, she entered the community mental health setting, working as a case manager for a private practice. As a mental health case manager, Maria worked with her clients in the community, including doing home-based care. During her training, Maria interned at Community Solutions, treating clients with substance use issues, and at Riverbend Center, where she treated clients in crisis.

After graduating, Maria moved to Virginia where she worked at The Farley Center–an inpatient addiction facility. Upon returning to Ohio, Maria was employed with the State of Ohio where she worked with severely mentally ill clients. Maria also worked within the Mahoning County Mental Health Court program during this time. Maria’s diverse clinical experiences and contexts help her work well with a variety of clients. Maria has been with PsyCare since 2016, where she counsels individuals with mental illness and substance abuse issues. In addition, Maria treats federal probation clients and runs a substance abuse group–assisting clients with reintegration into society after being released from lengthy prison sentences. Maria is also involved with Psycare’s newly established medically-assisted Suboxone treatment program.

Specialties

Professional Objectives
“I believe clients deserve to be treated with the upmost dignity and respect. A lot of clients have waited a long time to schedule their initial counseling appointment; therefore, they sometimes arrive feeling overwhelmed and full of anxiety. It is important to help them feel comfortable so they know they’re truly in a judgement-free zone. I enjoy helping client identify realistic goals and empowering them to reach them”

Theoretical Orientation
“I believe the most important component to counseling is the relationship between the counselor and client. I focus on building a strong rapport while meeting the client where they are at with their presenting problems. It is important to build a safe and trusting relationship so the client allows themselves to be vulnerable and progress. I enjoy educating clients, while providing insight and challenging negative thought patterns. I blend counseling techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Reality Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Strength Based Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. I am a believer in the connection between the mind and body, so I also like to incorporate alternative strategies when appropriate.”

Certificates/Special Training
Maria continuously attends continuing education seminars in various areas as required by the CSWMFT Board.
